How many formats should you start with in the first 2 weeks?
Start with one format. If you wash with a salicylic acid cleanser, then wipe on a BHA toner, then add a pad on top, the same ingredient touches your skin three times a day and you can’t tell which step caused the tightness.
If mornings are rushed before work, or you are a student washing up late at night after an evening class, a rinse-off cleanser is the easiest to log. If you pick a leave-on format such as a toner, pad, or serum, rest any cleanser with salicylic acid for 2 weeks. Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), the Korean agency that regulates cosmetics, advises checking the directions, warnings, and expiration date on the container or box carefully, so read the label before you start. In the US, salicylic acid at 0.5% to 2% is classified as an over-the-counter (OTC) acne drug ingredient, so follow the directions on your product’s label and ask a pharmacist or doctor if you’re unsure.

How many days a week should you use it?
In week 1, use it three evenings, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and in week 2, keep the same number or add a day only if your week-1 scores were fine. Studies included designs with twice-a-day use (the 2025 trial of 54 people) and every-other-day use (the 2023 trial of 100 people), but the evidence has no study comparing how often a first-time user should apply it, so start on the low side.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), Korea’s national public health agency, also warns that using acne lotions and creams too often can dry out your skin, and advises reading the directions carefully. On evenings when your skin feels hot, like a day with gym class, a day you sweated a lot working out, or a day late work pushed back your face washing, skip it even if the chart says to use it, and write “rest” in that cell.
How do you apply BHA?
Leave foam on briefly and rinse it off; for a toner, pad, or serum, spread one thin pass on skin you have patted dry after washing. For the first 2 weeks, leave out areas that crack easily, like around the eyes, the mouth, and beside the nostrils, and focus first on the chin or forehead where breakouts cluster.
The more you rub a pad, the more friction you add, so swipe once in one direction and stop. On days you wear a mask for a long time, the skin around your mouth gets raw easily, so let that area rest no matter what the chart says.

What are the side effects of salicylic acid, and when should you stop?
Tightness, dryness, stinging, and white flaking are the reactions most often logged, and if red patches or a puffy feeling appear, stop right away. In Korea, MFDS names salicylic acid as a key active ingredient in “functional cosmetics” for acne-prone skin, but also says cosmetics play only a supporting role and should not be used on mucous membranes or damaged skin (2025).
Log a brief sting that fades right after applying differently from one that is still there when you wash your face the next morning. Spots you have squeezed or scratched into scabs are damaged skin, so leave just those spots out when you apply it. During a week when your skin gets more sensitive, such as the week before your period, it is fine to go back to the week-1 frequency.
Weekday chart for the first 2 weeks
| Week | Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Sun | What to note the next morning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Once in the evening | Moisturize only | Once in the evening | Moisturize only | Once in the evening | Moisturize only | Moisturize only | Tightness, stinging, flaking 0–3 |
| Week 2 (all week-1 scores 1 or lower) | Once in the evening | Moisturize only | Once in the evening | Moisturize only | Once in the evening | Moisturize only | Once in the evening | Same scores + number of new breakouts |
| Week 2 (any score of 2 or higher) | Once in the evening | Moisturize only | Once in the evening | Moisturize only | Once in the evening | Moisturize only | Moisturize only | Repeat week 1 |
| Days to skip | Nights you washed late after a workout, sauna, or late work; days you wore a mask for a long time | Mark “rest” in the cell |
If you notice even one of the signs below, stop right away and only moisturize.
- Stinging or burning is still there the next morning
- Red patches appear on your cheeks or around your mouth, or your skin feels puffy
- White flakes lift up so makeup looks patchy, and even plain water stings
If there has been no reaction for more than three days after stopping, restart at the week-1 frequency, and if the same sign shows up twice, stop using that product.
When is it worth getting a dermatologist’s opinion?
- If red patches or swelling don’t settle after you stop and only moisturize, see a dermatologist.
- If the area where you applied it oozes or scabs spread, stop that day and get it checked by a dermatologist.
- If deep breakouts that hurt when pressed are increasing, or marks start to stay, see a dermatologist before switching products.
- If you are using prescription acne medicine, ask whoever prescribed it before adding a salicylic acid product.
What these studies measured, briefly
- In a 2025 randomized trial that followed 54 adults with mild to moderate acne for 12 weeks (PMID 39301780), a salicylic acid 1% cleanser and 2% lotion combination was used twice a day, and tightness and dryness at week 4 were significantly lower than in the prescription comparison group.
- In a 2017 trial that followed one side of the face in 25 people with acne for 10 days (PMID 28686778), the difference in dermatologist-rated lesion scores (redness, elevation, firmness, and so on) between the 2% salicylic acid spot gel side and the control side opened up to an average of around 15% to 20% within 1 to 2 days of applying it.
- In a 2024 randomized trial where 150 people used products for 56 days (PMID 37941097), lesion counts fell with both a salicylic acid combination cream and the comparison medicine, and the combination cream was better tolerated.
Frequently asked questions
What are the side effects of salicylic acid?
The reactions people most often log with salicylic acid at cosmetic strengths are tightness, dryness, and stinging. In a 2025 randomized trial that followed 54 adults with mild to moderate acne for 12 weeks, tightness and dryness at week 4 were significantly lower with a salicylic acid cleanser and lotion combination than in the prescription comparison group, but people differ. Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) advises talking to a specialist if red patches or swelling appear and not using it on damaged skin.
How do you apply BHA?
It depends on the format. Leave cleanser foam on your face briefly and rinse well with lukewarm water; for a toner, pad, or serum, spread one thin pass on skin you have patted dry after washing, and skip the eye and mouth areas. For the first 2 weeks, use only one format every other day, such as Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and if the label directions are narrower than that, follow the label.
What does salicylic acid do to your skin?
Most studies used finished products that combined salicylic acid with other ingredients. In a 2024 randomized trial where 150 people with acne used products for 56 days, lesion counts fell with both a salicylic acid combination cream and the comparison medicine, and the cream was better tolerated. So treat the first 2 weeks as a period for checking whether your skin tolerates this ingredient, not for judging results.
